Plant Rhizome

About this guide

A practical guide to growing and dividing plants that live underground for part of the year.

Plant Rhizome covers 59 garden plants that grow from bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizomes and tuberous roots. Each has its own page: what kind of store it has, how deep and how far apart to plant it, when to plant it, how to divide it, how to lift and store it, and whether it is safe around cats and dogs.

Where the facts come from

Planting, dividing and storage guidance follows the Royal Horticultural Society and university extension services such as Clemson Cooperative Extension and UNH Extension. Pet toxicity is quoted from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control plant list, and where the ASPCA has no matching entry we say so rather than guess.

Depths, spacings and dates are typical ranges and rules of thumb, not guarantees. Your soil, climate and variety matter; where a bulb supplier's label differs, follow the label. Calendars are written for the northern hemisphere and counted from your own frost dates.
